"Owen seriously if someone catches us I'm gonna kill you"

"No ones gonna catch us. They're filming a scene" He mumbled leaving a trail of kisses down my neck.

"That's what you said last time"

"They didn't catch us" He said pushing my shirt down my shoulder.

"Yeah but they almost did- wait. Are you? Owen" I scolded pushing him away.

"What?" He asked innocently.

"What do you mean what? The makeup department will literally kill me if I show up with another hickey. Then their gonna interrogate me like they did last time since there are limited people I see daily" I groaned.

"They're not gonna kill you y/n. Relax"

"I can't relax. Now that we landed a season 2 the chances of us getting caught are much higher now. Plus my character has such a bigger part now" I spoke pacing back and forth in the dimly lit room. Julie's room set to be exact.

"I know. But you can't let that get to you now. You did amazing the first season and your gonna kill it this season. And if we get caught then oh well"

"Oh well? Oh well. Owen I already told you I don't want anyone to know about us until-"

"Until we're sure it's not gonna effect our worth ethic. I know" He muttered sitting down on the bed. I sighed realizing he was upset. It was never my intention to date my co-star. Let alone fall in love with him. But after spending countless of hours on set and off set with him there was no denying the chemistry. And what to everyone seemed like an amazing friendship was actually something more.

"Hey, I'm sorry. I wish things could be different but-"

"But this is your first big part. I get it" he said moving to sit me on his lap.

"I'll back off. We'll just have to keep sneaking around"

"Owen-"

"No harm. No foul. If this is what I have to do to be with you I'll do it" He said kissing the spot he had previously been sucking on.

"And I'd do it again" He whispered kissing my skin once more.

"And again" Another kiss.

"And again" He spoke finally meeting my lips. The kiss last longer than the ones shared previously. It was much more passionate on both ends. The risk of getting caught high.

"Owen" I giggled as he flipped us over on the bed.

"Yes?" He questioned as his fingers made their way up my shirt.

"Baby" I moaned as his hands cupped my left boob.

"Mmm" He muttered against my lips.

"We've got to get back on set soon. I have a scene with Jer" I panted pulling away.

"Don't do it"

"Owen" I warned.

"Fine" He groaned getting off me.

"But for the record if they did know we were dating I would not give my approval for the stupid kissing scene" He said kicking the ground like a little kid. Referring to the fact that my character became Reggies love interest this season.

"Be careful there babe the jealousy is peeking through. Just be lucky he's married and they cut it down from a whole make out scene" I teased checking myself in the full length mirror.

"Yeah yeah. God the unholy things I would've done to you in that bed" He whispered in my ear as his hands explored my body.

"Don't temp me Joyner" I said a smirk making it's way onto his face.

"I'm here!" I called running onto set.

"Finally! Where were you?" Charlie asked exasperatedly standing beside Kenny who was looking at script at hand.

"We don't have time to interrogate her Charlie we've got to get this scene filmed if we wanna stick to schedule. Y/n next time be on set 5 minutes before"

"Yes Kenny. Sorry I was um was distracted. Lost track of time" I said noticing Owen had walking onto set casually going to talk to Mads and Savannah.

"Okay so this scene your gonna walk in on cue to your mark. Find Luke sitting on the couch playing his guitar. Sentimental talk. Confess your undying love for Reggie. Then Jers gonna come in tell y/c/n he loves her too. But he can't be with her because he had this girlfriend back in 95 who he never officially broke up with. Then he says screw it. You kiss. End scene"

"Oh the kiss. That's this scene?" I asked finding Owen who was deeply in conversation.

"Yeah. Is there a problem?"

"No, no I'm ready" I said not expecting to have to do this in front of my secret boyfriend right now.

I sighed going to stand on my beginning mark. I watched as Charlie did the same.

The lights dimming in the studio to replicate nightfall.

"And action!" Kenny yelled.

I opened the barn like doors walking in slowly.

"Oh Luke. I didn't know you were here sorry I'll go-"

"No. No it's okay. I was just messing around. What's up?"

"I was looking for Reggie"

"Looking for Reggie? Oh he's with Alex and Willie. He should be back soon"

"Then I'll just go. Thanks I guess"

"Wait. Can I play you something?" Charlie questioned taking a hold of my wrist.

"Um sure. Why not?" I asked sitting down next to him. I listened as he began strumming his guitar to a familiar tune. A small smile forming on my lips.

"That was great Luke. Did you write that? Maybe about someone whose name rhymes with Judy" I spoke in a teasing matter.

"No. Actually Reggie wrote it. About someone who name rhymes with yours" He said a blush forming on my face.

"Okay. I get what your saying" I said playfully rolling my eyes.

"Good. I thought I'd have to follow up with home is where my horse is" He said making me giggle.

"How could I possibly tell a ghost who died 25 years ago that I'm completely head over heels for him?"

"Maybe the same way your telling a ghost who died 25 years ago right now" Charlie said jokingly bumping my shoulder.

"Right... I just- I don't want to get rejected by a ghost. It's one thing when they're alive but if the dead doesn't want me I think that's saying something"

"Y/n, Reggies in love with you. He'd be thrilled if you showed any romantic interest in him. At least more than you already do" He teased me once again.

"Thanks Luke. I just hope he doesn't freak out on me like last time"

"Last time?"

"Yeah last time I brought up relationships in a topic he got all weird and left. So I just never did it again"

"Oh. Look y/c/n back in 95 we had a decent following and a ton of girls following after us" A strange look forming on Charlie's face.

"Okayyy" I stretched out the word.

"And Reggie. You know him he uh well he's a fl-" Charlie words were cut off.

On cue Jeremy strolled into the studio set as Charlie and I sat facing each other stiffly.

I stifled a giggle knowing this would later be edited so it'd look like Jer flashed in out of nowhere.

"Y/c/n? Luke?"

"Oh Reggie. Hi" I stood up continuing the scene.

"Hey. What are you doing here? I thought you'd be home"

"I was. Julie invited me over for a bit and I thought I'd say hi before I uh left. I though maybe we could talk for a bit"

"Oh. Okay yeah" He slightly smiled before turning to the brunette beside me.

"And what are you still doing here?" Jeremy asked looking at Charlie.

"Hey, I was just leaving man. She's all yours" Charlie smirked at us before walking off set.

Jer and I paused until his footsteps could no longer be heard before continuing.

"So um what did you want to talk about?"

"Just um stuff" I said standing still in my spot.

"What stuff?" He asked coming to stand in front of me.

"Luke. He played me your song" I said picking up the piece of paper with chicken scratch from the coffe table.

"Lifer Girl?" I finally read the title before looking up into his brown eyes.

"Uh yeah. I'm still working on the name. Did you like it?"

"I loved it. This lifer girl. She's one lucky girl. Do I know her?"

"Of course you do. Your practically the same person" he said a piece of my hair falling to the front of my face. I nervously played with my fingers as he pushed the strand behind my ears.

"Oh. Can you tell me about her?"

"Well she's funny and makes me feel happy when I'm around her. She's really smart and her grades skyrocket compared to what mine use to be. And she's beautiful, drop dead gorgeous" He whispered tilting my head up with his fingers.

For a moment I looked up into his brown eyes wishing. Longing for them to be someone else's. I felt his finger leave my chin before he turned away dramatically.

"I shouldn't"

"Shouldn't?" I asked curiously.

"I can't"

"Can't? Why not?" I questioned once more.

"Y/c/n there's something I need to tell you"

"What is it Reg?"

"Back in 1995 you know before we died. I uh-"

"You what?" I asked urging him to continue.

"I had a girlfriend and well then we died. So we never officially broke up" Jer said.

"Oh" I mumbled backing away from him.

"I get it"

"No wait y/c/-"

"No Reggie it's okay. Your still in love with her. Of course you are. God how could I be so stupid to think that you'd actually love me. Let alone like m-" My eyes widened as I felt him crash his lips into mine completely going off script. Which wasn't uncommon. But it was supposed to be a short kiss. There were lines that were missing.

Slowly I pretended to sink into the kiss. Pulling away after a couple of seconds amongst hearing the word.

"Cut!" Kenny yelled Jeremy finally letting me go.

"That was amazing! Spectacular! Great improve Jer! We're done with this scene!" He called out to us. But all I could focus on was the look plastered on Owens face. He was hurt. But not because of the kiss. But because of the fact that he couldn't do that. Not out in public anyways.

"Yeah great going Jer" I commented to the boy in front of me.

"Thanks y/n. You did great too" He said getting near me.

"But if I were you I'd go talk to your boyfriend before he bursts" He whispered in my ear leaving me wide eyed.

"H-how'd you?"

"Know? Please everyone knows. I mean you guys aren't great at hiding things. There's actually a poll between Kenny and Charlie. Whichever one of you slips up firsts. My bets on Owen" He chuckled.

"Seriously?" I asked.

"Seriously"

“Who was the first one to know"

"Sonya in makeup. The first hickey you showed up with only matched with the timeframe that you and Owen had been together. Clearly not getting lunch like you had said you were"

"That long?" I asked.

"Yup" He spoke popping his p.

"Just don't tell anyone I told you. Carolynn insisted I put you out of your misery"

"Thanks. I think" He smiled at me before walking away.

A grin began to form on my face as I made my way toward the blonde who was leaning against a wall twirling one of his drumsticks in his left hand.

"Hey. Great scene back there" He commented as I now stood in front of him.

"Thanks. You know Jers a good kisser and all but I think your better" I spoke aloud noticing Savannah's and Madison's head whipping towards us.

"What?" He asked making sure he heard right.

"You heard me Joyner" I spoke giggling at his shocked reaction.

"Now shut up and kiss me would you?" He tilted his head to be extra sure. Something I adored about him.

He always wanted to make sure I was certain about these things. I simply nodded feeling his arms wrap around me bringing his lips to meet mine.

I smiled into the kiss as he turned us around pushing me up against the wall. I giggled upon hearing clapping around us from the cast and crew.

"Finally!" I heard Savannah shout.

"Keep it PG kids!" Kenny shouted laughter following.

"You owe me 20 Gillespie!" He yelled again followed by a groan by presumably Charlie. I finally pulled away first leaving Owen in shock.

"I'm gonna need you to come back to reality lover boy" I said rubbing my thumb against his cheek.

"What made you change your mind?" He asked keeping a tight hold on my waist.

"Let's just say you have Carolynn to thank for that. Apparently everyone knew"

"What? How?"

"I guess we weren't as good at keeping a secret as we thought"

"How long?"

"First hickey"

“That long?"

"That's what I said" I laughed as he pressed a kiss to my forehead.

"You two are so cute"

"Thanks Mads" I smiled at the girl.

Finally able to wrap my arms around the boy who had stolen my heart without any warning.

Starring:

Mairon Artáno, overworked engineer at Angband Enterprises, originally from the small town of Valinor. Engaged to his boss, Melkor Bauglir.

Melkor Bauglir, CEO of Angband, estranged from his family.

Aulë Artáno, father of Mairon, Manwë Sulimo’s best friend.

Manwë Súlimo, mayor of Valinor, father of Eonwë, Melkor’s fraternal twin.

Eönwë Súlimo, Mairon’s ex boyfriend.

Celebrimbor Finwion, grandson of the deceased genius Feanor, civil engineer to be fixated on restoring Valinor as a lively small town.

So: Mairon is engaged to Melkor, and very much in love with him despite the significant age gap and fact that Melkor’s his boss.

A few days before Christmas, his estranged father Aulë calls him in a panic: Mairon’s teen brother Curumo has gone missing.

Mairon’s never gotten along with his father, but he remembers the younger brother who’s always looked at him with hero worship in his eyes.

So Mairon packs his bags, kisses Melkor goodbye, and returns home to Valinor.

His homecoming isn’t quite as pleasant as he’d hoped: he gets into an argument with Aulë almost immediately after he gets off the train—it’s your responsibility to look after your own son—and Mairon storms off into the night.

He hasn’t been home for years, and it’s changed more than he thought: Valinor had been a vibrant town then, fuelled by traffic from the highway. It had been bustling with activity, people walking through the streets, buildings lit up with signs and goods, a festival or special event seemingly happening every week.

But ever since the new highway was built, fewer and fewer people have been coming—and so many have been moving away. Lúthien’s son, for one, and his fashion company, and all his family and their employees—now gone. Shops and buildings are abandoned, storefronts left decrepit with nothing more than shelves of dust, flickering, poorly maintained lights. New roads were built, then abandoned to potholes and weeds, and old roads went out of use.

Valinor’s not a big place—it never has been—but with the new town layered over that in Mairon’s memories like a palimpsest, is it any surprise he gets lost?

A blizzard starts, and Mairon, still wearing his business formal, is ill prepared—he’d left all his luggage with Aulë, phone included.

He has no choice but to knock on the first door he sees: the house of one Celebrimbor Finwion, civil engineer.

Mairon’s not familiar with the Finwions—they lived a little north, in the community known as Formenos back when there were enough people that Valinor had to be divided into multiple neighbourhoods. He knows Feanor was a genius who had children and died early, and that his son Curufin had followed in his footsteps (except for the dying part).

Fëanor—Aulë’s contemporary—had a grandson a few years younger than Mairon.

Celebrimbor is in his house, still working despite the late hour—much to Mairon’s surprise and approval. Celebrimbor invites Mairon in—he doesn’t have a phone, since it distracts him from what he’s working on—and they begin to talk.

Mairon is, surprisingly, drawn to the young and ambitious engineer, who wants nothing more than to see Valinor as the lively town of his childhood, back when there was still life and light. Mairon, still in shock over how much has changed in the last decade, vows to help him.

They spend the night in pleasant conversation, and the next day comes but the blizzard doesn’t stop. They talk for the entire day, too, and Mairon’s shocked at how much he has to say to the young engineer. Mairon’s not much of a conversationalist—even a few hours of conversation usually exhausts him—but it’s been much longer and he’s still excited to continue.

The next day, they dig themselves out of the metres of snow, and Mairon returns to Aulë’s house. Yavanna and Aulë are worried sick for him, and they have yet another argument.

Mairon demands how they could claim to care and worry about him when they never seemed to do so during his childhood, leaving him to face the bullies at school and the solitude of years alone.

Aulë, incensed, retorts that he was only trying to save the town, working nearly round the clock in order to bring more business and new people—for Mairon, he might add, to have a future. How could you be so ungrateful, Aulë rages, and Mairon opens his mouth to speak but—

“Stop it!” yells sixteen year old Curumo, standing at the front door. “Why do you have to keep arguing like this? Aren’t we family?”

Curumo, it turns out, had wished every Christmas for his big brother to return home, and now that he’s old enough to not believe in Christmas miracles, decided to take matters into his own hands by running away to a friend of his, Olorin’s house.

Aulë and Yavanna vacate the living room, and Mairon and Curumo have a difficult conversation. Their childhoods were different ones, and they’re different people too, and Curumo’s hero, standing right in front of him, doesn’t exactly live up to his expectations.

Curumo cries. Mairon remains impassive.

The doorbell rings.

It’s Manwë, Aulë’s best friend, and his family—his wife Varda, and their two children Eönwë and Ilmarë. They’re here for lunch, as is traditional, and it’s a tense meal. Manwe doesn’t know what happened, but he and his son try their best to diffuse the tension—they fail.

Mairon volunteers to wash the dishes so he doesn’t have to speak to anyone except—Eönwe offers the same.

They’re in close proximity, and maybe Eönwë’s still not over their break up so long ago, but Mairon feels nothing. Their conversation is stilted, which only makes him long for Melkor—or Celebrimbor, surprisingly.

Problem solved—Curumo found—Mairon prepares to leave. Mairon offers to drive him to the train station, and he accepts.

There, he runs into Celebrimbor, who, disappointed, asks him if he’s leaving.

Yes, Mairon says.

Oh, Celebrimbor says. I thought—well. I know we’ve only known each other for such a short time, but you made me feel as I never have, as though I could tackle whatever problem the world gave me. And I thought you would stay, to help me with Valinor.

A train pulls up. Mairon should leave.

You make me feel the same way, Mairon says. I wish I could help you, but I—I can’t stay here, not with my family like this. There’s too many bad memories here.

We could… make new ones? Celebrimbor suggests.

A pause.

I love you, Celebrimbor blurts.

Silence.

Someone hugs Mairon from behind.

Guess who, says Melkor.

Mairon turns his head, and Melkor kisses him.

It’s your favourite fiance, Melkor says.

You’re my only fiance.

Celebrimbor leaves without another word, and Mairon can’t explain the deep sense of loss in his chest.

Come on, Melkor says, pushing Mairon towards the parking lot. I wanna see how much this town has changed.

Mairon barely has time to process that before—

Melkor? Manwë looks pale, as though he’s seen a ghost. What are you doing here?

As it turns out, they’re fraternal twins—which would explain why Mairon’s never made the connection. Melkor left very early, after graduating high school, desperate to get away from an overbearing father.

Mairon wonders how he’s going to explain this to Eönwë: oh, I’m dating your long lost uncle.

The tension skyrockets.

Manwe and Melkor have a shouting match. Aulë and Melkor have a tense conversation. Aulë tries to lecture Mairon on his romantic choices. Explaining to Eönwë is as awkward as he thought.

Celebrimbor is nowhere to be found.

Mairon, hesitantly, mentions Celebrimbor to Melkor.

Huh, he says, I had a crush on Fëanor when we were in school. If you—we—were to date him, I’d feel like I was robbing the cradle.

Christmas Eve is spent in awkward tension.

Christmas Day comes. Outside, everything is covered in snow. Inside, everyone is in surprisingly good spirits.

There’s a bit of Christmas magic in the air, after all.

Mairon talks to his family, and no one gets mad. There’s too many years and burnt bridges and things done—or not done—for them to make up, just like that, but it’s a start.

Manwë and Melkor talk. They’re older now, no longer teenagers, and with the years in between—and Eru dead—they can talk about it, now, their shared childhood, everything that was and no longer is.

All that’s missing is Celebrimbor.

A knock at the door.

I came to say, Celebrimbor says—

Whatever you have to say, no need, Mairon says. I care for you. And I’m hardly strictly monogamous, after all.

Celebrimbor is hesitant, but willing to try to make things work. They, none of them, know what’s going to happen, but it’s worth a shot.

You wouldn’t happen to know where Fëanor hid his jewels, would you? Melkor asks.

Celebrimbor doesn’t. But Maedhros does. And Melkor remembers the caves where they came from, filled with rock structures and glittering stone, like a glistening spray of stars against dark sky, enough to take anyone’s breath away.

This is it, Celebrimbor says. This is how we save Valinor.

And so, maybe they do get their happy ending. It’s not an easy path, no, filled with arguments and negotiations and tears, but it’s better than another world they don’t know, one where Feanor’s jewels nearly destroy Valinor instead of save it.

But in this universe, where Christmas has some power after all, there can be more laughter than tears, and the only rings Mairon creates are wedding rings—three of them.

It was supposedly her rest day, the one thing that she has looked forward to all throughout her jam packed week. Yet much to her dismay, despite her body being rested, her mind had other plans. Sakura could barely remember the number of times she has thrown her phone on the bed in a span of four hours.

It was a lot to take in.

Earlier today, it was announced that the number of positive cases for the pandemic has skyrocketed in Iwa, yet the council has decided to partly lift the quarantine there, increasing the people’s exposure to the virus as they try to go back to their normal lives before all these. It didn’t make sense.

Few moments later, a short video went viral on Twitter, wherein civilians from Ame flocked in front of their Kage’s Tower to complain about the lack of relief goods distributed for them in the past month. A month! To think that all of the Hidden Villages had been under quarantine for three months now and there were so many people in dire need of supply for their basic needs. It didn’t make sense.

There was also a reliable national media company that was shut down by Kiri’s council, at such a time as this wherein a credible source of news and updates was a need for everyone. Sadly, many employees have lost their job in the process, amidst the uncertainty caused by the pandemic which was the main issue their council should’ve focused on to begin with. Again, it didn’t make sense. 

What surprised her was the amount of facebook posts that disclosed irrational killings from members of a huge clan in the Sound, an issue that has been ongoing yet remained an elephant in the room for how many years. It broke her heart seeing the messages of relatives who were screaming for the justice of their murdered family member through typewritten words. Others even had videos of themselves with placards containing their stand on the issue. She couldn’t imagine how terrifying it must be to be there right now, what with the virus still lingering around them and the possibility of being shot on the spot just because you wanted to fight for your people. The Sound’s council continued to wash their hands. And yes, it didn’t make any sense at all.

But the last thing that struck her nerve was the decree that Konoha’s council of elders has released a few minutes ago, wherein any form of appeal or complaint by the people – whether via peaceful protest or a mere social media post – could lead to them being suspected as insurgents, which would then result to authorities having the right to detain them without a warrant of arrest. 

And just like that, the fact that the entire world was facing a deadly pandemic has gone down the drain. Honestly? Sakura didn’t even know what else makes sense right now.

She screamed against her pillow and continued lying on her bed. Her head hurt. Her eyes were puffy. Her heart was palpitating. And her hands began to shake as she breathed heavily in the confines of her bedroom. 

There were pain, frustration, anxiety, fear, anger, guilt, confusion, and so many other emotions bubbling inside her that they started to weigh her down even physically. Besides, it wasn't the first time that Sakura broke down during the twelfth week of quarantine. Everything externally and internally was just too much to bear these days.

She thought it would be nice to return to social media after being away from it for a week, leaving her stuck with the messaging apps that she kept active only because she needed them for work. But she was totally wrong on all levels. 

It was nice that she became informed about the latest news, yet she now learned that indeed, too much exposure on social media wasn't helpful for her at all. She needed to take a break, or maybe lots of them.

It took a while before the tension in her body ebbed, and when it did, it was the best feeling in the world.

Still, extensive exhaustion filled Sakura from the inside out, leaving her with no more tears to shed as she sat up after a 14-minute nap. These days, naps kept her going, though they weren't really enough. She was glad the rampage in her brain paused somehow but she wished it could've been like that for hours. Well, it's better than not being able to sleep at all.

Moments later, her eyes widened due to the sudden vibration of her phone. There was an incoming message. And she couldn't help but feel on edge once more as she felt frozen in place. 

Please don't let it be my boss. Please don't let it be about my presentation! Or wait, is it mom? Are they okay?

Sure, she could've stopped herself from getting her phone with her now sweaty hands and checking the SMS considering that it was her rest day, but the nagging guilt inside her about saying no to anything asked of her overpowered her senses. And there was also the thought that it could be an emergency, she didn't want anything to fail just because she didn't respond immediately.

With her decision being final, Sakura took three deep breaths before opening the text that she received, yet what she saw on her screen made fresh tears trickle down her face once again.

Sasuke Uchiha:

I'm just here, okay? Let me know if you want me to call you.

Sakura didn’t expect to receive such a heartwarming message at the exact moment she needed  it. She hasn’t seen Sasuke ever since Konoha imposed a nationwide quarantine and they haven’t even talked online for weeks, but for him to suddenly message her with such reassurance as if he knew that she needed to hear it, it made her feel like they had no distance between them for months. 

She read the message once more, and as she parsed the two sentences like it’s from a language unfamiliar to her, it slowly felt like the dark cloud above her head began dissipating somehow.

A part of her hesitated in responding to him. She didn’t want to sound needy. She didn’t want to be a bother, because for sure, Sasuke also has baggage of his own.

However, she realized that he was not the kind who would ever think of her that way. Never did he look at her with judgmental eyes, only with concerned ones. And that was enough for her to trust that it wasn’t something to be guilty about if she accepted his generous offer of being a listening ear that night.

Sakura didn’t bother typing a message anymore, instead, she scrolled through her contacts and called his number, fingers slightly twitching in nervousness. Because what if he's suddenly busy? What if he's not really interested in what she would say? And what if he would change his mindset about her after whatever she'd be able to share to him tonight?

Her mind was bombarded with tons of "what ifs," but when she heard a gentle "Hello?" on the other line, she was unable to stifle another cry.

"Sakura, how are—?"

Her sobs became a little louder, and she was worried that Sasuke would end up cutting the call.

"It's alright, Sakura. Go on, just release that. I'll stay here."

Yet he surprised her again. She didn't know how many minutes passed by as she just teared up with Sasuke silent on the other line. As her cries kept going, relief slowly entered her system like it was something she had never frlt before. She didn't know she needed to cry with somebody until she called Sasuke. She realized that it was so much different than when she was having a breakdown on her own.

"Are you feeling better somehow?" Sasuke asked when her muffled cries subsided.

"Y-yes. I guess."

"You know you can tell me anything." 

She heaved a sigh, nodding her head as if Sasuke would see her. "Thank you, Sasuke."

"Don't thank me yet. What happened?"

And then Sakura told him everything, from the terrifying news that astounded her that afternoon up to the messy details of her hectic week. 

She told him about how worried she was for her parents who were in the province, wherein the number of those affected by the virus was increasing day by day. And as much as she wanted to help them with their food supply, she felt helpless that she couldn't do much while she was here in the city. 

She also told him about how she felt like she was merely moving in a tiny box instead of flourishing in her profession, how it seemed like she was going nowhere in life despite being at the ripe age of 27. 

She mentioned regarding her presentation that she wasn't really happy about, because it wasn't something that she wanted to do. And even though she tried her best in working on it, she already knew that her boss would not even recommend it to be approved.

Speaking of her boss, she also expressed to Sasuke how the mere presence of her boss made her feel so small, like she was a physical representation of a failure. And just thinking about having no choice but to stay in that company, especially considering the pandemic situation, saps her of the little motivation in life that she has left.

Sakura still had a lot to say. But even she could not express and understand them yet. So she just ended her words with the truth that she has never felt so alone until right now.

That's when Sasuke spoke a full statement again other than his cues that he was listening earlier. "I'm so sorry that you are going through all these, Sakura. You're right, things could've been better so you didn't have to end up feeling the way you do right now. But you know that I'm here, right? And it's not even just me. The dobe is there. Also the rest of Rookie 12. Sakura, it may not feel like it but I want you to remember that I'm here. I never left and I never will."

Another stray tear escaped Sakura's eyes. "That means so much to me, Sasuke. That means so much. Thank you."

"Always." She could hear the smile in his voice. "I'm glad you were able to share all that with me. I hope it was helpful."

For the first time that day, Sakura found the urge to smile. "It was, really. I'm sorry it was too lengthy and messy, though. I...I honestly don't really know how to express everything. My mind's just so clouded right now."

"Hn. It doesn't matter, Sakura. It's okay if it's lengthy and messy, as long as you were able to let it out."

There was just silence after that for Sakura didn’t know what else to say. Even silence with Sasuke was comforting, so she just allowed that comfort to consume her continuously, never wanting it to end.

“Sakura?” 

“Hmm?”

“You’re not weak.”

Gasping a bit, Sakura could feel the tears starting to brim her eyes again, but this time, not due to the negativities inside and around her. 

Sasuke continued, “You’re not a physical representation of a failure either. You're made for so much more. I’ve seen you succeed in so many things, Sakura. And we all fail, but our failures don’t define us. Your failures or what you think as shortcomings don’t define you at all, you hear me?”

“Y-yeah.” She sniffed and wiped a tear with the back of her hand. “Sasuke, you’re making me cry again!” Sakura slightly giggled amidst her tears, and Sasuke could imagine that if he was beside her, she had probably slapped him hard enough on his arm while saying this.

He let out a chuckle. “Now look at you, you’re already laughing.”

“Your fault.” She huffed playfully. 

“Not sorry at all, then.” Sasuke grinned on his own. For him, he didn’t even do much, but for Sakura, it felt like Sasuke had pulled her out of a deep trench by simply being there.

There was one question that lingered in her mind ever since she received his text message. And so she asked him before they even ended the call. “Uhm...Sasuke? How did you know? I mean...why did you message me? How did you get the idea that I wasn’t feeling my best this week?”

Quietness filled the other line for a few seconds. “Intuition, I guess. You’re like that with me also, aren’t you?"

It was true, there were instances before that Sakura was the one who reached out first, as if it was a coincidence that he wasn't at ease with something by the time she talked to him. The only difference was that, during those times, they saw each other often, unlike now.

Sasuke added in a softer voice, "This wasn't the first time, Sakura. Maybe – no – I believe it’s because we’re…” 

Realization hit Sakura even though Sasuke didn’t even mention the word. And then she beamed, because honestly, she felt that too. They were connected, and no quarantine could affect that connection that they had.

Sakura muttered with a smile, “I believe that too, Sasuke.”

That night, she was able to sleep with a light feeling for the first time within the week. All thanks to Sasuke for reaching out when she started crawling underneath.

Here's a thing, God loves you and cares for you so much, and that's the reason why you could throw the whole weight of your anxieties upon Him. He will listen. And whatever it is that you would tell Him, it wouldn't change the fact that He loves you just the same🥰 So go, throw it all to Him now, I pray that you personally experience the peace that transcends all understanding once you do so❤️

On the other hand, I know some of us have diagnosed conditions and the situations around us are definitely not helping us recover further mentally. I'm not an expert but I really hope we could help one another during this time so here are a few reminders:

If you have medications, take them regularly and make it a priority. If needed, it's even better that you restock early regardless of the quarantine status in your place. I actually almost forgot taking my meds twice this week! Hahahuhu. But thank God I was working on this fic in the middle of the night so I still got to take it before sleeping😅

Make sure to take breaks even short ones within the day, especially during work days. Take a nap. Play an instrument. Eat. Read fics. Watch an episode of an animé. Anything that would fill your tank so you could be pumped up somehow as the day continues.

Lastly, don't hesitate to seek help from your trusted friends. Please, don't. You are loved. You are not a bother. You are worth listening to. You are valuable. You are made for so much more.

I interrupt my normal programming of posts about movies, TV shows, art, books and everything I love, to tell you this:

If you’re thinking about sharing something about Venezuela, make sure you have all the facts and not just the Government-approved “facts”.

I get it. It’s difficult. The Venezuelan Government controls almost all the media, and those they don’t control are threatened into silence. So when you Google what’s going on, you’ll find yourself thinking we live in the most wonderful place on Earth. 

We don’t.

Here are nuggets of information that can help you understand:

1- No, what happened is not a coup. Guaidó is using our Constitution -articles 233 and 333- against Maduro, showing him that his illegal means to get things done have, finally, backfired. The figure of “interim President” is completely legal, and has been used by the Government before after an actual coup -but they’ve conveniently forgotten about it!

2- No, Maduro wasn’t elected in a "transparent” election. Prior to it, he: moved the date of the event to benefit him, imprisoned / disabled our main candidates, stole the National Assembly’s faculties -which was composed mostly of the Opposition after a massive popular election, and that pissed him off- and gave it to an illegal alternate Assembly appointed by him and his cabinet -which was supposed to change the Constitution, but later became an institution that could act above the law and responding to no one but themselves-, and changed the members of the Supreme Court and the Electoral Council so they were both composed mostly of -you guessed it!- people in line with his ideas.

Oh! And Smartmatic, the company in charge of those “transparent” elections Maduro-loving foreigners love to talk about so much, admitted the numbers given by the Government in favor of the illegal alternate Assembly had been tampered with.

So, what did the Opposition do? Tried to negotiate and to reinstate a more level ground with certain conditions, he refused and went on to do his election anyway. Which, by the way, had the lowest turnout in recent years, since people refused to participate in his sham.

Did he care?

No.

Now, tell me: after all that, would you have voted in that election, considering that glorious landscape?

Probably not. 

3- The Opposition isn’t perfect. They have done really shitty things and let down their own people over and over again. 

Still, today, we are in the hands of people who are completely inept at doing the only thing we pay them to do: care for their own people and managing our resources fairly. Because, remember: we owe them no loyalty. They’re our employees. The people we pay and trust to handle our resources correctly.

If they can’t do their job and people are suffering, dying and fleeing the country on foot, risking their lives in the process... we are just supposed to just...take it until they’re done screwing us over?

Why do we have to bear the people who have been in control of everything for almost 20 years and given away our oil and resources to Cuba, China and Russia?

Guaidó is a young politician. For many, he represents change, and we not only yearn for it, but we need it.

4- The Government relies on an empty ideological war to keep itself going. It’s easier to tell people that, sure, everything can be blamed on the U.S; instead of holding Government officials accountable for corruption, squandering and failure.

The worst part is: foreigners eat it up! They love the Venezuelan Government although they have never set foot in the country and would never give up their comfortable lives to come here.

These are also the same people who are very concerned about our oil and resources going to the U.S, but conveniently forget that:

a- our Government hates the U.S but has no problem receiving their mighty dollars after selling their oil almost exclusively to them -so the U.S already has most of our oil, darlings!

and b- our Government loves to buy allies like Cuba, Russia and China by giving away our oil and resources to them. But I guess being under the thumb of those countries is perfectly Ok. Good Imperialism, right?

5- No, your country isn’t doing worse than us. Yes, every country has violence and poverty, unfortunately. But let me give you a little list of what we’re going through:

- Famine

- A staggering scarcity of food, medicine, and medical supplies -which, by the way, kills patients in hospitals every day

- A high rate of child mortality, like never before

- Illnesses that had been eradicated are coming back

- An inflation rate around 1300000.00 -yes, that many zeroes!- percent 

- Our technology is mostly outdated, and anything new is unaffordable for a regular citizen

- We have one of the most dangerous capitals of the world, and people abandon the streets as soon as the sun comes down, out of fear

- There’s total impunity since our policemen have no resources -or legal ability, thanks to laws passed by Chavez and company- to actually get things done or protect us

- Suicide rates have skyrocketed in the last few years

- Many schools and businesses have closed because they can’t keep up with the inflation

- A large majority of the youth has left the country

... and I’ll stop there, because I could go on, but I think you can get a pretty good picture just from that.

So no. Things might be bad in your country, but if you go into a store you will probably see aisles properly stocked, and you probably don’t live with the crippling fear of getting sick or killed on the streets for that old cellphone that took months to pay. If anything, you can have hope. Which is something we lost a long time ago.

6- My experience is not less important than what you think you know. I’ve lived here for 27 years, and lived under this regime for almost 20 years of my life. I’ve lost friends, family, people I love. I work three jobs. I never have enough money to save and provide for a better life for my family. My grandmother and mother were middle-class women who worked all of their lives, and still, they have nothing left because we’ve had to use our combined savings to survive in the last 6 years.

My mother and I have cell phones, we need them for our jobs, but we don’t take them out with us anywhere because we know we could get killed for it. So when one of us goes out, the other stays at home praying nothing bad will happen to me/her.

We sold our second-hand car because we couldn’t afford to maintain it, so we depend on our feet and pitiful public transportation to get where we need to go.

We’re afraid of getting sick. And I haven’t had a check-up since 2016 -which was paid by my job at the time.

Still, I’ve had to deal with pro-Maduro foreigners since yesterday -like, for example, Boots Riley-, spouting “facts” at me and dismissing my struggle. Because, I guess, I don’t matter.

So, don’t tell me how the statistics you Googled have convinced you that Venezuela is a wonderful paradise and we all love Maduro. Don’t tell me that my experience contradicts what you think you know, so therefore I’m either lying or unimportant. Keep your Venezuelasplaining to yourself, because I have to actually live it.

So. PSA over!

There’s so much more to say, and so many things to consider...But for now, continue with your lives, and please help educate people outside.

How do you feel about derivative art? I'm guessing you approve since you're big into fanfics. Is art that's derivative as good as original art? Could a well made video critique of a film be better then the film? Or a fanmade rewrite be better then the original book? And yes I know nothing "original" exist, but that's not the same thing as art that is obviously derivative. And the big question. Should artist be allowed to make money off derivative art?

For me it’s an all around “Yes.” I’ve read fics leagues better than published novels. I’ve seen fanvids far better than films. Granted, when you get into the subject of visual media you run into things like finances and access to technology. Anyone can craft a story with words, but only a few have the budget and tools required to re-create the sort of Blockbuster films we’ve grown used to. But why in the world would that very specific style be the only “good” art out there? Obviously it’s not. If anything, we value limitations in our art. Six second vines shot on cell phones are adored and can lead to lucrative careers. Films like the Blair Witch Project want to mimic an armature cinematography, like these people really were just shooting what they could while running for their lives. Amateur does not in any way equal lesser. To say nothing of the fact that fans have shown time and time again that a passion for the material and a huge amount of work ethic is more than enough. As the recent Loki logo abomination attests, all the money and resources in the world doesn’t guarantee taste---or success. Outsiders to fandom love to criticize the “horrible” fics they found when they dove into AO3 for all of ten minutes, but fail to acknowledge that you’re just as likely to find a terrible book when you pull one randomly off of B&N’s shelves. If derivative art is somehow lesser than we need to re-evaluate the comics industry. And every formulaic western, rom-com, police procedural. And every great author (there are a LOT) who wrote “classics” based off of other’s characters and worlds. Art is art. Mainstream art is in no way superior to fan art, no matter how much people still want to convince us of that. 

The money question is, admittedly, waaaaaay more complicated. For me though it’s still a “Yes” simply because of how fandom functions. That is, we need the canon. Even if it becomes outdated, or is considered offensive, or is absolutely terrible compared to what the fandom has now produced, people will STILL consume that material (and more importantly buy it) in order to get access to all the good fan stuff. I’ve simply never bought into the argument that derivative works are a threat to the livelihood of the original piece because they depend on that piece. All my friends are in a fun discord for TV Show X. They’re producing all these fics I want to read. I’ve heard that Show X is actually pretty bad, but I’m going to watch it anyway because that provides me with the context that produced all this other stuff. It’s the foundation, the blueprints, the golden ticket to get inside the fandom. Will every fan do this? No, some do bypass the canon and just dive right in, but the majority of them will. Meaning that rather than posing a threat to the original author’s livelihood as most people assume, fanworks help keep mainstream content alive. Adding a price to that doesn’t change anything. If someone offers me a fic for free I’m gonna tackle the canon book first. If someone offers me a fic for $10... I’m still gonna tackle the canon book first. Either way the author gets paid and are likely to get more if fans use their work as an entry point into the fandom. “I wouldn’t have read/watched your stuff at all, if it weren’t for the fact that I want to read the stories my friend is now producing.” Giving that friend some rent money is the least we can do. 

(There are obviously other arguments against making money off of derivative works, two of which boil down to “It’s against the law”---which funnily enough we create and control and can change if perspectives change---and “They’re my creations and I don’t want you messing with them, let alone making money off them.” I’ve got a lot of feelings regarding that one and in an effort to save a bit of space I’ll boil it down to a very unkind response: Too bad. Transformation is at the heart of human interaction with art. If you didn’t want that you shouldn’t have given it to the public in the first place. Authors don’t get to police how fans interact with their work: “I love it when you take the time to write me glowing reviews! .... oh, but not when you write another story. Please continue making awesome fan posters that promote my work! ... but not one with those two characters kissing ew.” Authors don’t get to dictate how fans interact with the art they’ve put out there; how much of it is active and in what ways.) 

We also have to consider that we’re already in a world where those lines are irrevocably blurred. Why does E.L. James or Anna Todd get to make a fortune off of their barely changed fics? Why do artists get to sell their fanart but fic writers are still largely terrified of lawsuits? Fans are already making money off their work---always have, really---and I doubt that’s something we can reverse. Whether or not it continues to grow is the real question. 

Personally, I wouldn’t want to see derivative works commercialized, not because fans don’t deserve to earn money for their labor (we do), but just because that would irrevocably change fandom dynamics. We’re a gift economy and we’re built on that. Fandom has always been about progressive acts: be it writing about queer identities, providing accessibility accommodations decades before mainstream art did, or (and this is the kicker) helping to level out class differences. Meaning, mainstream art is often for the rich and the elite. Broadway shows are insanely expensive and impossible for most to get to. Movies prices have skyrocketed. Every company is creating their own streaming service, requiring that you pay three or four $20+ monthly subscriptions instead of just the one. It’s all about money and fandom is one of the few places where we still exchange art for praise and more art, rather than a paycheck. Fic is free. Fanvids are free. You guys want a cute drawing of this couple? All you have to do is send in a prompt ask and I’ll draw it! Sure, I’d also love it if you paid for a commission, but I’m going to keep creating free drawings on the side. When was the last time we saw a mainstream author go, “Please continue to buy my last story, but in the meantime here’s a free novel I’m putting up on my website. Hope you enjoy!” I mean yes, we do get things for free (especially when it comes to many games, apps, and some short stories), but not like in fandom. There’s a culture of giving that I never want to lose. Are we already doing commissions and con sales? Yes. Do we often ask for donations and payment? Yes. Should we be able to continue doing so without fear of legal action? I think so. But I don’t want a general sense of “I should be allowed to earn money off of this” get turned into “Well if I can earn money off of this why wouldn’t I?” I never want our work to exist fully behind a wall where the key in is your credit card number. Fandom is unique in its, “I made this thing because I wanted to and I shared it with you because I wanted to do that too, no strings attached” and that, I think, is worth protecting.

Fine, We Were Responsible for the Straight Pride Parade

*Originally titled "the time we thought straight people couldn’t get any dumber, made a bet, and then watched as they hit rock bottom and kept digging"

This is mainly directed at you Straight Pride Parade bastards. I read an article today, showed it to Aden, and we decided that yeah, we should probably fess up in a minor way.

You know that feeling sometimes when you trip or fall in your dream, and wake up with a jolt, feeling like you just fell a long way?‌ Yeah, I need to take credit for that idea. Not that I go around each night in the metaphysical dream realm and throw people off cliffs just for the kicks1, but that whole jolting you awake at 3 AM thing? That was totally my business pitch.

Anyway, that doesn’t relate in any way to this post.‌ Just keep in mind that we (both angels and demons alike) have the ability to just dip into others’ dreams and extend a little Heavenly or infernal influence.

This is a relatively recent event compared to all the other stories we’ve got, but we figured it’s a fun story to tell.

A few months ago, Aden and I‌ saw a gay couple being kicked out of a coffee shop, with the manager proclaiming loudly that ‘this is a Christian establishment’2 3 and that said couple should never return. And I’m the demon and all, yes, but then, I had to almost physically restrain Aden from rushing at the homophobic dick and giving him a shiner.

We left right alongside the couple in protest, bought them a meal at another diner4, and I‌ personally made sure that when the manager went home that night, he’d find that his walls were much thinner than he remembered, and that the couples living next to him, below him, and above him suddenly had much more energy for their libidos.

So when we went home that night, we were suitably tipsy, which is a context that often leads to entertainingly tangent-y discussions. It started with Aden drunkenly flipping through the Bible, finding Leviticus 18:22, and cursing when he finds the translation wrong.5

See, the thing is, the English translation of the Hebrew Bible is just slightly off. America paid for it, back in the day, and we’re not entirely sure what the Hell happened6 with the translation, but it came out different and gave millions of people the wrong impression.

In the Hebrew, Greek, German, Swedish, Norwegian, and undoubtedly countless many other translations of the Bible, the quote “Man shall not lie with man as he does with a woman, for it is an abomination” is instead (correctly) translated into “Man shall not lie with young boys as he does with a woman, for it is an abomination”.7

See the difference?

It’s all a great big bloody misunderstanding, is what it is. The Bible condemns pederasty.

So we began thinking. If millions—billions, really—of desperate Christians will believe and live by a wrong translation, how much stupider can they get?

We made a bet.

Aden’s money was on straight people already hitting rock bottom. Mine was on the belief that straight people—and people, in general—have, in fact, already hit rock bottom, but that it wouldn’t stop them from descending further.8 In fact, I‌ said, I can hear the pick-axe sales skyrocketing already.

And we had to prove that one of us was right, didn’t we?

So our million-dollar idea was this: If we could get someone to celebrate heterosexuality with pride, in the sense of June being Pride Month9 and rainbows being flags of proud defiance against oppression and all, then I‌ would win the bet. If our targets refused to do something so blatantly disrespectful, then Aden would win.

You can probably guess who won.10

That night and the rest of the nights in the week, Aden and I would occasionally infiltrate and pop up in random dreams of heterosexual Christians (and/or other religions/lack thereof) and we tried our best to influence them into thinking that they, as straight people, deserve to be celebrated and proud of their sexuality.11

We didn’t expect it to, you know, work.12

And the thing is, you know, this isn’t even a new thing!‌ I went ahead and researched straight pride parades, and apparently, it’s been around since the late 1900’s, which is ridiculous. Humanity’s been around for… as long as we have, which is give-or-take five millennium, and they still sit around with the ability to pull this kind of utter bullshit.

How incredibly stupid is that?

I don’t remember their names (the guys behind the parade in Boston), but just in case they’re reading this:‌ Hi. Right big idiotic bastards, the lot of you. So idiotic, really, it’s almost hilarious. And besides that, you have an incredibly stupid website with an equally ridiculous domain name.

And one last thing:‌ Advocating to put an ‘S’ in ‘LGBTQ’?‌

God, Satan, and every being in between, I don’t even know where to start with that one.

Which, by the way, is an utterly stupid thing to say in response to kicking gay couples out of your establishment. Fuck you if you do that. God never said shit about disliking gay couples, She only talked about disliking pedophiles. And Her son just disliked figs. We would know. Aden met him once. The waiter who was serving the couple looked downright mortified and embarrassed about his superior’s behavior. Aden managed to convince him—afterwards, in a subtle manner—to resign, and he made sure of the fact that the ex-waiter (he couldn’t have been more than 18 in age) found a nice job with decent pay. ↩︎

The diner in mention had friendly people running the place and excellent food. The couple was grateful, and insisted on buying us drinks. Right now, the four of us are engaged in a loop of buying each other food and drinks. It’s fun, really. ↩︎

Aden wants me to mention that he never curses. That’s wrong, because I‌ can quote him, word for word, on that night—“Zan, Zan, would yo—look at this. Look at this bullshit—’Man shall not lie with man, for it is an abomination’—they really thought that was—God, ‘m not drunk enough for this shit”—and many other nights as well. Don’t give me that look, angel. ↩︎

Although Hell definitely might’ve happened. My kind aren’t inherently homophobic or anything, but it wouldn’t have been unthinkable for a demon to think it funny for a large amount of people to hate homosexuals. I’m not that guy. Abaddon definitely would’ve approved the idea, though. Whichever bastard it was probably got a commendation for it. ↩︎

Gamora’s tongue hit cold metal. “What. The. Hell?” she spat.

A familiar scratchy voice cracked the silence open like a grenade. “Sorry Quill, I tried to hold him off but he had half a pineapple upside down cake and-- oh, hello Gamora.”

The assassin followed the words up the long metal barrel she had been tasting just a few seconds ago to the very furry, even more agitated face of her new least favorite Guardian.

“Hello Rocket.”

“So all I’m saying is that we either need some heavier ammo or to get our asses off this ship because--” A tremor shook the Milano. “Shit. He’s here.”

The three Guardians watched in a bewildered sort of shock as the Mad Titan strode into the room, slamming the door behind him.

Gamora furrowed her brows-- her father had never slammed doors; it was impolite.

There was a short second as Rocket hammered the trigger on his gun and a spray of bullets flooded in Thanos’ direction. But the Mad Titan only held up his hand and every one of them stopped, hanging in the air like a swarm of flies.

“Ahem. Listen here...rodent.” Her father’s voice had a strange ring to it-- though Gamora couldn’t quite place how . “I told you that I wished to see my daughter so see my daughter I shall. We have terms to discuss-- those of her betrayal-- and those of her return. Yes Guardians I am stealing your friend away from you!”

“Yeah right, dickface: over my dead--” The raccoon had started to let out a low growl when the assassin jabbed a finger in his ribs.  “Rocket. Be quiet.” She muttered through gritted teeth. “I appreciate the gesture but he actually takes that stuff really seriously.” 

“Uh duh. He’s Thanos. And you be quiet. I’m trying to save your ass over here.” There was a theory bandied about in intergalactic philosophy that the smaller you were, the more emotion-- in this case, the more rage-- was concentrated closely within your body. At the moment, Gamora could believe it.

All the same, no one was forcing Rocket to be a self-righteous dick

“I’ll save my own ass. And yours too since you apparently get your kicks from hurling it into danger.”

“What?! You take that back--”

“Excuse me,” Gamora’s father stuck a delicate purple index finger between their two faces. “I don’t mean to interrupt what is clearly an emotionally charged conversation, but I would like to pose a solution. Consider this: you all fight me.”

The three Guardians stared at him.

“He really is mad.” Rocket muttered.

“Well I thought it was a decent idea.” Thanos replied , obviously taking offense at the raccoon’s words. “Everyone gets a go at the most hated criminal in the galaxy; the Guardians strengthen their bond by fighting together and any chance of beating me skyrockets.”

Quill turned his gaze sideways to Gamora. “Is this… some kind of trap or something?”

But the other Guardian just shrugged. There was something off about this whole conversation but this-- this was just Thanos being Thanos. “He’s probably sincere. No point in beating an opponent if they aren’t at their strongest, right?”

“I think we’re going to have to agree to disagree there.” Quill sighed. “But you’re the expert on--”

“On fighting.” The Mad Titan cut in, again in that peculiar tone. “Not on me, correct? Because Gamora doesn’t know anything about me. We barely interact except when I...when I force her to do my evil will.”

“Your… what?” This conversation was becoming very strange indeed. As far back as Gamora could remember, her father was probably the only person in the galaxy that hadn’t used the e-word when referring to himself.

“My evil will” Thanos continued as though the idea was perfectly obvious. “You know, the tasks that you always rage and rail against with courage befitting a true heroine.”

The aforementioned heroine was about a couple of seconds away from grabbing this purple stranger by the neck and asking him what on earth he had done with her father. At least then she could get an explanation for this madness. But something made her stop in her tracks.

A wink.

So fast and faint that had Gamora not been a cybernetically-enhanced assassin she might have missed it.

But she was.

“Shit.” Gamora could see her father’s lips twitch as though he was trying to hold back the word “Language” -- which only served to confirm her suspicions.

The assassin swore again, this time more quietly. Then: “Father, please stop this.”

“Stop what?” Now that the Guardian knew what was going on, she could pinpoint what was wrong with Thanos’ tone-- anxiety. The Titan Eternal’s voice, normally so confident and full of fire, had taken on a slight tremor as though it were that of an actor, lost upon the world’s greatest stage. Which Gamora supposed, to be fair, it rather was.

And as per the usual, her father had done it for her.

No more. The ex-assassin raised her voice to respond. “I said stop this ridiculous charade. Someone’s going to get hurt. Most likely Rocket. And besides that- I’m done with all the lies, all the secrets.”

For a moment Gamora thought her father was going to ignore her, but today must have been the day for all impossible things, because he only shook his head and sighed. “Are you sure, Gamora? If you wish these to be your friends… well I cannot change who I am but I’d be willing to play the villain they all think me to be. And paint you the heroine you’ve always been”

“I know. But, like I said, no more secrets.”

Gamora’s glance slid from her father over to two other Guardians who were exchanging a look of confusion. And for once, the daughter of Thanos could not blame them.

“Uh, do we still shoot him?” Rocket asked, hoisting his gun-- which apparently still had ammo-- over his shoulder.

His teammate replied with a shrug of her shoulders. “You could try. But I doubt it would work.”

“Seriously Gamora, what’s going on?” Quill muttered. He was still, the ex-assassin noticed at her side, “What his he saying-- ‘play the villain’, ‘paint you the heroine?’ Also, why does he talk like that?”

Again the third Guardian shrugged . “Well… I can’t answer that last one. In fact, I’m pretty sure no one can.  But as for the first two questions… Peter Quill, Rocket Raccoon, I’d like you to meet my father Thanos.”

“Greetings.” The Mad Titan waved.

“As you may have noticed, we fight a lot. I disapprove of basically everything he does. And he’s made a lot of shitty mistakes parenting.”

“Well I don’t know if I’d go that far--” Thanos stopped short as Gamora gave him a look. “Alright. Well, at least one mistake. Maybe a couple. At least I never taught you how to use that word.”

“Fair. Anyway, I used to help him do his world-conquering death crap. Yeah. It’s the truth even if I wish it wasn’t.” Gamora shut her eyes, blocking out the Guardian’s faces. Peter already knew what she was but Rocket...this would be a surprise for him. “But I never liked it because I thought it was wrong. So I stole an Infinity Stone, left and met all of you.”

“You used to… be on his side?” The raccoon, for once in his life, appeared to be at a loss for words.

But Gamora was not. “That’s what it meant to be Thanos’ daughter. What were you expecting, Rocket?” The words came out harsher than she intended. Byproduct of a couple of months living in abject fear of discovery, the ex-assassin supposed.

“Dunno. Mostly to be more pissed than this. Guess you can’t help who your parents are” The other Guardian let the gun fall to his side. All the same Gamora noticed, he never clicked off the safety, continuing with a small note of bitterness in his words. “But you can help what you do. Like lying.”

“Don’t blame her, Rocket the Raccoon. Blame me for I was the one who--”

But the Mad Titan’s words were cut off by the click of nail on metal as the Guardian strode over to the door. “Yeah, you aren’t really helping anyone’s case, grapenuts. I’m going to find Groot-- he’s gotta know what’s going on too. I mean-- along with you know who. But there’s no way in the Seven Systems I’m going to be the one to tell him.

“Shit.” Peter replied, earning a glare from Thanos. “I forgot about that again. He’s ...probably not going to take this very well, is he?”

“Again duh. But that’s not my problem because I didn’t lie to the rest of my team.” Rocket gave what could have been one last sarcastic grin as he slipped out the door. And as much as Gamora wouldn’t have minded punching him in the face right there and then, she knew that in a lot of ways she deserved every bit of venom dripping from the raccoon’s tongue.

She had worked with Thanos.

And she had lied.

But that phase in her life was over. All of them-- Rocket, Drax, Groot and Peter-- they’d have to realize that eventually right?

“Don’t worry.” Quill took her hand. “He’ll come around at some point. Rocket’s just got… a lot of trust issues he needs to work through. And with finding out that you are who you are-- I doubt that task is particularly easy right now.”

Gamora winced. The two had shared the same living quarters for several months but there still was a large gap in her knowledge when it came to the combative raccoon.

“He certainly is a troubled character, isn’t he?” The Mad Titan commented, seeming almost to pull the words right out of Gamora’s head. “All the same… he was willing to lay down his life to keep you from my grasp. I agree with Star-lord: your bond will not be broken easily. And well…” Thanos cleared his throat rather awkwardly. “If it means anything, I approve.”

“It means something.” Gamora still wasn’t entirely sure what that something was but she couldn’t deny it all the same. The two were quiet for a moment in what could have been a shared moment between father and daughter. Or perhaps an empty silence between two people who were just now realizing that the other was not what they seemed.

“I suppose I should get going then.” Thanos sighed. “Ronan’s waiting in the Sanctuary and, anyhow, this was only really meant to be a short visit.”

“Are you sure?” Gamora asked, half out of propriety and half because she didn’t know what else to say. “I mean, most of the pirates have already left and as, well, long as you don’t intend to kill half of everyone here…”

Quill started as though in all the chaos he had forgotten that was a possibility. “You weren’t actually going to do that... right? Because that would, uh, totally ruin the party.”

Thanos gave the Guardian a faint ironic smile. “While I have a long and storied record of ruining parties, anyone who knew my purpose would see that I do not invite death without good reason. In fact,” The Titan drummed his fingers against his side in the kind of absentminded gesture that would better suit a professor than a warlord.  “to show my good will, I have left enough of my pineapple upside down cake in the atrium as to ensure the enjoyment of all your guests. Well. One half of your guests anyway. It was a sociological point that had to be made .”

“Right…” Quill said rather faintly. Gamora brushed her fingers to his in a small gesture of understanding-- her father was a lot to handle, especially if you weren’t used to him. And not many, on occasion including herself (if she was being honest,) were.

“I shall take my leave then. Well wishes to you both-- particularly to you Gamora.” Thanos paused. “Remember, I am always here whether you need an elite Chitauri army or… an ear to listen.”

The Mad Titan’s daughter almost smiled. “Yeah. I’ll remember.”

If she looked carefully, she could see the faint traces of a smile on her father’s lips as well. “Very good then.” he replied. “I’ll be in touch.”

And with that, Thanos Titan, Thanos Warlord, Thanos Death strode out of the room with a happy look on his face and a hum under his breath.

You’ve never really been one for school, provided that the knowledge doesn’t really get you anywhere in life and the only well-paying jobs require an attentive brain that’s constantly going. For you, the process of school days is waking up at six in the morning - four hours before your brain is fully functional -, hurriedly eating breakfast, catching a bus, and spending eight hours in an environment that only teaches you how to hate everyone around you.

You don’t recall how or when you got at the Academy for Gifted Juveniles, nor do you really remember why it even appealed to you. All you remember is that you were exceedingly good with poetry, constantly hoping for some form of inspiration as you flipped through uninteresting novelty or webpages on your laptop. Nothing.

Except for now.

One morning, after eating breakfast, you’d taken to the library, hoping to find a few good novels around here to read on your spare time in your bedroom. The Monokubs don’t really care what you do, though they do seem to get a bit aggressive when bored. When you saw Kaede - you could never understand her, to be perfectly honest with yourself - get executed so brutally and the blue Monokub die along with her, that hammered the fact into your head.

You’re constantly going through certain genres, picking up a book, flipping through it, and putting it back. Pretty, aesthetically pleasing covers are what stick out, yet their contents are bland and boring. The girl falls for the jerk, the apple falls close to the tree; nothing sets any of these novels apart. Looking through fantasy one more time, you decide ‘screw it’ and grab five books randomly, holding them to yourself and making it to the door.

Just due to poor luck, you barely register the door opening from the other side, colliding hard with someone coming in and losing your grip. One book falls on your foot, the pain knocking you down to your knees and palms. It’s all a blur of colors for a moment, and you take a moment to register what had just happened despite it being very much clear.

“Are you alright?”

Realizing the person you’d bumped into had spoken, you grumble a quick “Yes” before moving to recollect your books. As if in remorse, they bend down, bandaged hands - you’ll ask why when you’re not angry - collecting the books nearby before sliding them to you. You nod in thanks, placing your books upon them and picking up the stack, standing. It’s here that you decide to look up to see who you had bumped into.

Your heartbeat skyrockets at the sight.

Standing there is a young man, tall and fair, decked out in what you at first guess is some sort of military uniform. Upon closer inspection, however, you almost hit yourself realizing that it’s not a military uniform but rather a regular men’s school uniform with some modifications. The red on his arm indicates him being part of a club, but you can’t tell what it could possibly be. It takes you a moment before you notice he had just spoken to you again.

Catching yourself, you blush. “I-I’m sorry, could you repeat that?” You ask politely. “I’m not myself today.”

Only slightly irritated, he nods, cat yellow eyes almost piercing into you. “I was attempting to warn you that you should be more wary, even in mornings,” He replies, his voice what most people would call ‘ASMR’. The sound sends pleasurable tingles up and down your spine. “I’m without reason, however, to get particularly angry at you, so you can relax.”

You nod, gulping a little. Adjusting your hold on your books, you shakily reach out your hand. Though, before you can get out a proper introduction, he beats you to it.

“Forgive me, we’ve not been properly introduced,” He hums, reaching and gripping your hand. The bandages feel a little grubby, but you won’t comment on it. “I am Korekiyo Shinguji. But, I would like to ask you to simply call me ‘Kiyo’. I’ve been told it’s easier on the tongue this way.”

Lord, he’s eloquent...

Your heart feels like it’s about to break out of your body and drop onto the floor. “[Name] [Last Name]... It’s nice to meet you.”

“As it is to meet you, [Name],” He nods, his previous irritation nonexistent. “If it’s no inconvenience, please tell me what you have been doing here. I can only guess from the book genre you’re carrying that you’re bored.”

“I am,” You reply. “I’m not really used to talking to people, so to be perfectly honest, I’ve been planning to spend the day reading and writing.”

“Ah, I see,” Kiyo hums. “However, I must say that such a thing is a displeasure to hear. Isolation is a detriment to individuality as it is to general society. That will not do.”

You tilt your head. “I... guess you have a point, but what brought this on?” You ask.

“Ah.” His hand falls from his shoulder to fondle the pocket watch looking thing hanging from his neck. “You must forgive me, [Name]. From an anthropological point of view, to be separated from people is a problem.”

It clicks. “You’re an anthropologist?” You ask.

“Indeed,” Kiyo replies. “I came because it’s quiet. I despise loud noises.”

“Yeah, same here,” You respond. “Though, only for a little bit. I am planning to return to my room.”

“If it’s what you insist upon, I will not stop you,” He says. “But, I’d like you to know that it would please me if you’d take some time to spend with the others. Being sociable will greatly benefit you, I’m certain.”

“Well, I...” You don’t feel like spending time with the others, given one of them is possibly the creepiest boy you’ve ever seen and another is very big and very weird. “... Kiyo, neither of us feel like being where there’s a lot of chatter, and it would probably do me some good to spend time with someone. So... Maybe we could read together?”

Suddenly, his interest seems piqued. “It pleases me to know you’re willing to spend time with me. I won’t object. Allow me to direct you to some of these books over here; I’m with a lot to tell you of and we’ve much to discuss. Worry not; I shall never bore you.”

The two of you then proceed to spend about two hours discussing books on culture and romance, given sci-fi seems to bore him and horror absolutely disgusts him. It’s not that you’re surprised at the latter - nobody’s even trying in the genre anymore -, though you would have expected him to show at least a little bit of intrigue in it. Curiosity killed the cat, you suppose.

One particular book - one on older Japanese culture and the like - catches your fancy, and you point to an illustration as the two of you continue to learn. For the first time, you’re enjoying learning and you’re constantly wanting to learn more - something Kiyo seems to sense.

“What’s the red rope about?” You ask. “I remember that section about the Red Strings of Fate; is this linked?”

He chuckles. “This, [Name] would be Shibari - or Kinbaku, to be more precise. It’s also what would be referred to as BDSM,” He replies. “But no, it’s with no link to the Red Strings.”

“BDSM?” You echo. All he does in reply to you is stare deep into your soul like he’s silently asking if you’re truly this deep in the dark about the subject. “... Please stop looking at me like that.”

“My apologies. It’s been quite a while since I’ve come across someone unfamiliar with it,” Kiyo says, looking back down at the book. Wait.

“You’re familiar with Shibari?” You ask, to which he nods.

“Yes, I am. Very familiar, actually,” He replies. “I’d be happy to show you what I know, if you so desire.”

Any sorts of implications go flying straight over your head. “Sounds interesting. I might just take you up on it,” You nod, giving him a big smile.

“Good,” Kiyo nods, eventually glancing at the clock far off to the side. “Ah. The others might come looking for us. Best go to make sure they don’t assume anything incorrectly. It might deter them from an actual murder.”

You shudder.

“Come, [Name]. We shall discuss more later,” He tells you. “My, I don’t remember the last time someone’s listened so intently and wanted to learn so much. I feel as if we’ve made excellent progress.”

“I’m excited for our next session, if you’d like to call it that,” You nod. “I’d really like to learn more about these things.”

The look on Kiyo’s face is unreadable aside from palpable approval. “Come, [Name].”

All you can think of while the two of you go down the hall to find the others is, I’ve made a friend.

“Don’t do iiit, honey,” Ruby warns, her voice a bit slurred. You’ve been having a girls’ night, you and Emma deciding that after a week of various unexpected events you should finally relax and you definitely earned a drink. Or two.

So, you invited Mary Margaret and Ruby to a club and the four of you are now more or less drunk. And, given that alcohol usually makes it easier to open up, Ruby asked a question about your current love interests.

Mary Margaret only blushed and said she wasn’t interested in anyone in particular. She wasn’t a very good liar but neither of you wanted to embarrass her so you kept your mouths shut.

Ruby confessed that men were more and more boring to her, although she wouldn’t mind hooking up with that cutie sitting by the bar. He was, indeed, good-looking.

Emma mumbled that she had enough of men for the rest of her life and that Henry was her priority at the moment. You’ve never been prouder.

And you… well, tequila definitely went to your head and so, without thinking twice, you told the girl the name of your crush, instantly silencing them all.

After all, nobody would guess that you were head over heels in love with none other than Mister Gold. You can’t tell what precisely made him so irresistible and wanted by you. Maybe it’s his confidence, so close to arrogance? Maybe the way he speaks, that accent of his and smirk, ever present on his face?  

Age difference? Please, those trivial things never bothered you. The cane? You don’t give a damn about it. He makes your knees weak, a shiver to run down your spine and a tiny jolt of nervousness to course through you. Never before has a man succeeded in making you both intimidated and drawn to him.

Yet your shyness prevented you from showing your affection in any way. You couldn’t build up courage to even suggest that you liked him, not to mention straight up asking him out.

But now? you felt bolder than ever! Damn, you swear you can move mountains, what’s scary in texting your crush? What can possibly go wrong?

“Bullshit, Imma do it. Just one text, let me see if he’ll text me back, right?”

“Alright, but only one text,” Emma points a finger at you in what’s supposed to be threatening manner but it ends up utterly funny when she accidently bumps your nose. You giggle, taking your phone out of your jacket’s pocket.

“Here comes big nothin’”

You unlock your cell, ignoring missed calls. They’re not important now – you’re a girl on a mission, one that demands your full focus and all the creativity you can muster after having one too many drinks tonight.

You open a new message thread, choose Gold’s number and bite down at your bottom lip, trying to come up with something, anything.

“Text him something along ‘hey, I’m having a drink, wanna join?’” Ruby suggests but Mary Margaret shakes her head.

“No, that’s too straightforward. Just start with ‘hi, how are you?’”

You roll your eyes at her and start typing.

Gold, are you busy? Have a minute to spare to talk to me?

Emma hums in approval, glancing at your phone from over your shoulder.

“That’s a good one. And no typos, very good.”

“Let’s drink to that!” you call, raising your glass and girls cheer loudly, all of you downing another shot of tequila. You grimace slightly, reaching for your phone, a bit disappointed that there’s no reply yet.

“Chill, girl. C’mon, drink up,” Ruby urges with a wide grin and you smile back as she fills your glass. Gosh, you really needed it.

Ten minutes later, as Emma’s venting about Regina and her bossing around, refusing to see Henry and overall, how hard it is to be a sheriff, you check your phone. There’s still no text from Gold, so you decide to send another one.

Blinking to focus your gaze on the screen and the keyboard, you let your thumbs click on the letters.

After another shot of tequila you’re not 100% certain whether you sent him more texts or was it just your imagination.

“Oh, poor thing,” Granny says with a hint of amusement in her voice as you step into the diner, your pale face and pained expression telling enough about how much fun you had the previous night.

“Can I get a coffee, please? Like, a lot of it?”  you ask meekly as you slide into a booth, resting your head in your hands. Thank heavens that Emma called a day off today and that Sundays are usually very lazy. You don’t even want to imagine what a efficient cop you’d make today.

“Coffee, scrambled eggs and bacon.”

A plate is put in front of you, after it a large cup with steaming black liquid joins the party and a feeling of gratefulness rushes through you.

“Granny, you’re an angel,” you say fondly and she flashes you a soft smile before returning after the counter.

You take the cup in your hands and blow off the steam few times before taking a careful sip. You sigh with content, feeling much better and frown when your phone vibrates, notifying you about new message. You take it out of your pocket and, much to your horror, there’s a message from Gold.

“Shit,” you murmur, your eyes growing wide and your skin becoming almost white as you look through the text you sent him the previous night. And there was definitely more that those two you remember.

10:53pm - Emma says im a fool but im only a fool for u.

You stare at the screen as if the evidence of your shameful behavior can magically wipe itself from your phone, Gold’s phone, yours and his memory and, overly, the history of the world, but it remains there, unchanged.

You heave out a sigh, take another sip of the coffee and with pounding heart you type a response.

“The hell?” you murmur, not really understanding what he meant. Is he mocking you? Having fun with you? You can easily visualize him with a smirk on his face as he toys with you, putting you in more and more misery.

But then again… he doesn’t seem to be a man who’d play with other’s feelings.

Y/N, would you mind if I joined you for a breakfast?

Your heart skyrockets as a cold shiver runs down your spine. You’re both excited and terrified but the mixture somehow makes you bolder and so you reply.

Sure, but I look like crap. Feel warned.

I’ll be there in a moment.

You barely put your phone away when the door opens, the bell rings and you will yourself from running in that instant. You lower your head and squeeze your eyes shut, when a figure takes a seat opposite you.

“You lied,” he remarks, his tone hinted with humor and you jerk your head up to look at him.

“What?”

“You don’t look like crap. Quite the opposite, to be honest.”

“Damn, you’re blind? I have the worst hangover ever and I feel like dying, but that’s really nice of you, mister Gold.”

“I’m glad to hear that. Also, about those messages-“

You groan silently, hiding your face in your hands, too ashamed to even glimpse at him. You hear him sigh but he continues.

“No, don’t finish it,” you whine and Gold chuckles, noting that you look absolutely adorable when embarrassed. He gently reaches for one of your hands and reveals half of your face.

“Y/N, I just want to ask if you stand by what you texted last night? You’re sober and we can act as if nothing happened, if what you said was untrue.”

“It was, errr…. It was true,” you say quietly, feeling your cheeks warm up with a blush and, much to your relief, Gold smiles brightly, his eyes wrinkling a little.

“Well then… would you do me an honor and go for a dinner with me tomorrow?”

A grin makes its way onto your lips as you fold your hands on your lap, fixating your eyes on Gold.

“Gladly.”

Two Guardians Walk into a Bar...

Ok so I told myself drabble. Two hours later this is 1.3k.

Dialogue practice with Auburn, and testing out my hand at Cayde’s voice and tone as well as nudging his character towards something more complex and interesting than provided.

Cayde’s a smart ass, but if you listen carefully you can learn a thing or two from the snark.

Auburn wasn’t a drinker, really, not alone, not outside of social nights. But she’d discovered once that as well as being a half decent bar, this particular hole in the wall had an unrivaled green tea, lemonade, and peach brew. She was stewing over it, allowing herself for once to let down the smile, to be moody and just sip something sweet.

Another patron came in the door, boots clacking. It formed something bright on her periphery, another Guardian. A Warlock would probably have felt them coming blocks away. She glanced towards the newcomer as they approached the bar, took in an exo and did a double take.

“Cayde?” Her eyebrows skyrocketed in disbelief, and she cocked her head, giving him a long suspicious glance.

He swiveled towards the attention, throat lights bright and jaw slightly unhinged, a winning Exo smile. “Guardian? Ah! I know you! You’ve got that uh, that catty Warlock.” He waved a finger as if it helped him remember. “The one trying to take my place at the top of Ikora’s “Top Ten Exasperating Exos” list.”

“You remember me.” She deadpanned, a tone faintly teasing. “Touched.”

“Yes, yes, I’m kidding.” Hands up as though he was threatened. “I remember. Lucky you too, I got enough Hunters to keep an eye out for, you’re one of the few Titans I keep up here.” He tapped the side of his skullcase while spinning around the stool beside her, straddling it backwards with his arms up on the seatback.

“Honored.” She drawled, watching him with a side eye while she took a sip of her glass. “You get off early or something? It’s hardly evening.”

“Ahhh, Ikora’s in the lower levels at a secret occult meeting with Eris and some Warlocks.” He gestured back toward the tower. “And Zavala’s meeting with some wall maintenance people, I guess they want his approval on some thing or another.” He waved in the other direction. “Soooo I figured I’d sneak off, have a drink.” Conspiratorially, he leaned in and muttered, “I’m not here, you didn’t see me, I was checking on shipments in the hangar. Amanda will vouch for me.”

She chuckled, nodded. “But really, here?” A perfectly cocked eyebrow made Cayde squirm.

“Stop! That it’s an Ikora look. Ugh.” He shivered perceptibly, a whir coming from his vibrating joints. “I’m doing a thing this year, different bar every day, gonna test every joint in the City.”

“There’s more than three hundred bars around. That’s going to keep you busy longer than a year.”

“I know.” He whined. “And I keep going back to this spicy ramen place…” Auburn nodded knowingly. Everyone was aware of the ramen place.  It was terrible, legendarily so, except for those who could handle a full cup of chili powder on a spoonful of noodle. She was pretty sure Cayde just professed his love to make the shopkeeper feel better. Or maybe to convince unsuspecting kinderguardians to try it, and suffer. Sick bastard.

“What’s this place got anyway?” He gestured with a wrist to her drink. “Good stuff?”

“It’s four in the afternoon.” She said impassively. “It’s just tea. What’s it to you anyway? Don’t you drink coolant or something?”

He slapped a hand noisily over his breastplate. “I’m hurt. Wounded. And they let you to mentor an Exo?”

“She’s never been to a bar!”

“And they let you mentor anyone?!” He huffed and shook his head, gesturing to the bartender with two fingers and giving his order through a fake cough, fist in front of his mouth. “Ah, coolant please.”

Auburn let out a single chuckle, stirring the ice in her glass. The conversation lapsed into silence.

The Hunter Vanguard noticed. “Aren’t you ah… one of those cheerful ones?” Cayde asked tactlessly. She gave him a questioning glance. He shrugged. “You’re usually a smiler, right?”

“Ahm. I suppose.” She relented, then skeptically added. “Didn’t you say last week to someone that you can’t read organics?”

“I was avoiding further conversation that time.” He said dismissively. “You’re in a bar, alone, staring at a glass, not even drinking. You’re moping.”

“Yep. Top tier super sleuth you are.” Auburn took a sip of her tea pointedly.

“I mean, I’m an expert moper myself, know the signs. I’m sure to anyone else you are the epitome of sunshine and joy right now.” His glass arrived, and he took it up absently with his free hand, the other gesturing as he spoke.

“Wow Cayde, is there nothing you don’t excel at?” She feigned admiration with the flattest of eyebrows.

“I know, I know. I’m truly remarkable. Thank you for noticing.” He threw back some of the glowing liquid, same color as his lights. “So, need a hand?”

“With moping?” She asked, incredulous. He waved his hand as if to say ‘why not?’ “Isn’t that typically, a personal endeavor?”

“A conversation rarely is.” He added hastily. “Unless you’re a bit nuts. Which I suppose by nature we all are. A bit. Sorry I’m losing my point here.”

“I got it.” She smiled, hollow, bottom half her face only. Cayde still made a pleased noise, perhaps he hadn’t noticed the nuance. She gave it a moment’s thought, swishing the ice until she caught Cayde’s pointed glance. No avoiding this then.

“I haven’t lost anyone.” She admitted. “No one I loved. Never watched a stranger’s Ghost crushed in front of my eyes either. It’s been eight years. I feel like I’m due.”

Cayde hummed, a purely Exo sort of hum. She thought of Selene and was comforted, faintly, before her fears reminded her that her second was another on the list of loves that could be lost.

“That’ll always be there.” He said sagely. “No matter how many you do lose. Trust me. I’m over a hundred.” She felt guilty immediately. It had only been a couple months since Tannik’s cloak had shown up in the Vanguard hall.

“What do you do about it?” She asked quietly. Cayde snorted.

“For organics? Simple.” He raised his glass in her direction.

She raised an eyebrow at the glowing teal liquid. “That gonna make me sick?”

“Oh, definitely.” He pulled it back, a bit of the contents splashing. “It was just a gesture.”

She snorted in reply, but felt herself comforted anyway. “Thanks.” She set her own glass down and clasped her hands, rubbing her thumb around her left palm, her self-conscious tick. “What do you do about it?”

Cayde paused, glass partway up to his face. He tapped his fingers on the outside of the glass and set it down. “You know. Ikora is probably done with that meeting now. Or soon. Anyway. She’s gonna be pissed if she finds I snuck off. Yep.” He quickly produced some glimmer from a pouch, enough for both his drink and Auburn’s own.

“Wasting some of your precious loot on me?” She said snidely.

“I feel like it’s a worthy investment.” He gave her a pat on the shoulder. “Good talk Guardian. Good talk.” He pointed at the glimmer. “Pay me back sometime, somehow.”

Auburn shook her head with a grin, put her cheek in one hand and drummed her fingers on the countertop with the other. Cayde stood and spun his chair back around before making his way out.

“Tell you what.” She called after. “If I figure out how to deal with these emotion things. I’ll let you know, okay?”

“Ha. Sure Guardian, sure.” He pointed at her, thumb cocked like holding a hand canon, jogging backwards through and expertly dodging the room’s tables. “I’ll hold you to it.”

She turned back to her half full glass of tea, shaking her head. But as she sat and sipped she realized there was a little less weight, a little bit of a tug of a lingering smile. And maybe there wasn’t much she could discover that Cayde hadn’t already.

The U.S. economy’s got something. We both know it, but we don’t talk too much about it.

Ain’t no real big secret all the same. Somehow, we get around it.

Listen, it don’t really matter to Wall Street. Investors believe what they want to believe.

And what Wall Street believes right now is that you don’t have to live like a refugee.

This morning, Moderna Inc. (Nasdaq: MRNA) reported positive phase 1 results for its COVID-19 vaccine.

That’s right, dear reader: The cure is here. With the Dow surging more than 800 points, Wall Street doesn’t have a shadow of a doubt that the virus will be vanquished.

It’s once again “game on” for the economy, and even the losers stand to make big gains in the coming market boom.

Even President Trump was all “Damn the torpedoes!” this weekend, telling reporters at a Rose Garden event: “I just want to make something clear, it’s very important. Vaccine or no vaccine, we’re back.”

Now, I know that this seems real to you, but it’s one of those things you got to feel to be true.

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell certainly feels it. Powell projected a 20% to 30% contraction in U.S. economic growth … but said in an interview on CBS’s 60 Minutes that the economy would avoid a Depression-like event:

I think there’s a good chance that there’ll be positive growth in the third quarter. And I think it’s a reasonable expectation that there’ll be growth in the second half of the year.

I would say though we’re not going to get back to where we were quickly. We won’t get back to where we were by the end of the year. That’s unlikely to happen.

Given the state of the U.S. labor market, contracting retail sales and the overall economic malaise, Powell is right to inject some caution.

Despite today’s massive market rally, now is not the time to go all-in. It’s gonna take time … a whole lot of precious time. It’s gonna take patience and time to do it right. (Yeah, I jumped from Petty to Harrison, so what?)

The vaccine headlines are promising, and it’s tempting to relax your safe haven bets and go all-in on this market. However, until a cure is readily available for everyone, there will be a lack of consumer confidence. And that means more bad economic news and more market volatility.

That said … I know you Great Stuff readers are eager to dip a toe in the market, especially with today’s rip-roaring rally ratcheting up the FOMO (fear of missing out).

Good: COVID-19 Cured?

We can all go home now; Sorrento Therapeutics Inc. (Nasdaq: SRNE) cured COVID-19. (Wait, we’re already home…)

The microcap biotech announced on Friday that its experimental treatment for COVID-19 cures the disease. In preclinical testing, Sorrento said that its coronavirus treatment provides “100% inhibition” of the virus within four days. The company claims that the drug will be the first to provide a “protective shield” against COVID-19.

It’s a bold strategy, Cotton. Let’s see if it pays off for ‘em.

Turns out that Sorrento has only tested its cure on cells in a lab — i.e., no real-world testing at all. The company still needs FDA approval for animal testing, which comes before phase 1 testing with humans.

In short, Sorrento’s claims of a COVID-19 cure seem premature at best. Furthermore, given the company’s progress on the drug, competitors such as Moderna are sure to beat Sorrento to market. But that hasn’t stopped the stock from skyrocketing on the news.

SRNE stock is very “buyer beware” right now. The company has a promising drug in development, but it’s far from living up to the “cure” status Sorrento is pushing in the media. Hype may drive the stock higher over the short term, but investors should get their gains and get out before reality sets in.

Better: Get Your Bases COVID

All anyone can talk about lately in the biotech sector is COVID-19. It’s understandable, but there is so much more out there worth investing it!

Take Novavax Inc. (Nasdaq: NVAX), for instance. Yes, the company rocketed to fame for its COVID-19 vaccine development. But, Novavax is more than a one-trick pony, as its quarterly report detailed.

Novavax reported first-quarter revenue of $3.4 million and a loss of $0.58 per share. Both figures were stronger than Wall Street expected, pointing toward strong growth even before the coronavirus pandemic.

What’s more, even if Moderna beats Novavax to the punch on the COVID-19 vaccine, Novavax has another trick up its sleeve: its NanoFlu program.

NanoFlu is Novavax’s answer to the boring ol’ regular influenza. The flu vaccine is already in phase 3 testing and proved more effective at flu prevention than Sanofi S.A.’s (Nasdaq: SNY) Fluzone vaccine.

Given that nearly 49 million people in the U.S. still get the flu every year, Novavax has quite the market for its new flu vaccine. With NanoFlu and a COVID-19 vaccine in the works, it’s a one-two punch for NVAX investors that could pay off big down the road.

Best: Our Only Hope

Here’s how Wall Street apparently sees Moderna’s latest vaccine news:

Step 1: Humanity is saved.

Step 2: ???

Step 3: Profit.

Given the biotech’s phase 1 results, these steps may not be far off.

Moderna reported that all participants in its COVID-19 vaccine phase 1 study showed antibodies against the virus by day 15 — after receiving just one dose. Your body produces antibodies to fight off viruses, and it could indicate you’re immune to the disease.

Patients who received two doses of the vaccine showed antibody levels similar to patients who already recovered from COVID-19. Those who received three doses showed even higher antibody levels.

Moderna now heads into phase 2 trials to further determine effectiveness and dosing ranges. If you’re a biotech junkie looking for a company with the best COVID-19 vaccine potential, MRNA just jumped to the front of the line.

The stock is up more than 335% so far this year, and it’s likely heavily overvalued. However, if Moderna continues to release positive trial data, the stock’s vaccine-hype run is far from over.

I was struck by an uninsured driver on 02-10-11. Because the driver who struck me was uninsured I was forced to file a claim with my insurance company(Omni Insurance). The car was towed to CJ's collision at 6128 n beechwood Philadelphia, pa ,19138 on 02-11-11. Phone number 215-848-2836. On 02-14-11 Omni insurance sent out an appraiser to evaluate the vehicle. They then faxed an estimate on 02-15-11 totaling $5300 to CJ's collision shop. I went to the collision shop on 02-15-11 to sign paperwork giving them permission to work on my car. They then began the repairs. On 02-18-11 the insurance company then deemed my car a total loss. The vehicle is a 2005 Nissan Altima SL with 96,477 miles. The NADA value for the vehicle is 10,995. According to Omni insurance a car is deemed a total loss when the repairs reach 70% of the value of the vehicle. Omni insurance valued my car at 7,415. They then proposed a settlement offer of 5826.40. They deducted 975.00 in prior damages(which I disagree with) and 1000.00 my deductible. The settlement offer included 386.40 in sales tax. After negotiating on 02-28-11 they proposed an offer of 7835.30. The value they gave my car was 9255. Again 975.00 was deducted and my 1000.00 deductible. They including sales tax and tags/registration fee in the offer. I accepted the offer out of desperation because they also stopped paying for the rental car I was driving on 02-28-11. I work, attend school and have a child my schedule requires that I have a car so I paid out of pocket for a rental car until 03-07-11, expecting the payment to be issued to my lien holder by then so I could purchase another car. I contacted them on 03-07-11 inquiring about my payment and was informed they did not pick the vehicle up from the collision shop therefore they were not issuing a payment. The collision shop gave them a bill of 1750.00 for the repairs they did and the storage fees. The insurance company disagrees with this and refuses to pick the vehicle up and issue my payment. They have also stated this may come out of my settlement offer. The insurance company already has the title to the car and all the necessary paperwork to the vehicle but refuses to issue a payment. It has been a month since I filed my claim and I can no longer afford to pay for a rental especially since it seems I will have to purchase a new vehicle. The insurance company is low balling me and also forcing me to pay for repairs they approved then backed out of.""

Hot. That’s the word you’d use if someone asked you to describe yourself. Not in terms of appearance, though. Your body always felt as if on fever, your temperature usually a bit higher than normal. You couldn’t understand why people complained about feeling cold in winter – you were sweating even in lightest sweaters. And summer… well, summer was hell.

Your parents were worried at first, of course they were. It wasn’t common for a kid to constantly be that heated but every doctor said the same thing – apparently it was your nature, nothing they could do about it, given that the meds did not work.

At first, everyone loved being around you. You were a comforter of sorts, the best hugger when it was chilly, always warm, always welcoming. It changed, however, when you accidentally rubbed your thumb and middle finger together creating a tiny flame. That was when people started avoiding you. They called you a freak, a weirdo, blaming you for something you had no control over.

And so, you shut yourself from others. You’d become distant, not trusting even in the slightest attempt of getting close to you. You didn’t want to get hurt. You didn’t want to hurt anyone by accident. You believed that you were some kind of danger to others, with that unwanted fire inside you, burning you from within.

But first and foremost, you were scared. There was nobody who could teach you, who understood your difference, who offered to explain why you were like that.

You started to feel like you belonged somewhere only when you met Wanda Maximoff, a member of the Avengers.

She found you one day when you were sitting in a park, reading a book. It was a rather chilly spring day, but you felt like scorching so you shrugged off your jacket, using your hand as a fan. You wouldn’t be surprised if a smoke came out of your ears.

Startled when a strange girl came to sit on the other end of the bench, you started to gather your things but she gently stopped by placing her hand over yours. She told you who she was and that there was a team of people with superpowers, using them to protect and save people. She said that they were looking for others with various abilities, which very much resembled you X-Men movies you’d watched some time ago. She wasn’t pushy – she offered you a place among them, giving you time for consideration.

At first, you were conflicted. It just didn’t feel real. Yes, you’ve heard of the Avengers, everyone knew about them but it was too good to believe in. They wanted you to join them? A girl who didn’t know how to even use her powers?

But then, you realized that if they asked you to join, they would be able to train you. And maybe, you’d no longer feel like a freak.

So, few days later, you arrived at the place, to which Wanda gave you an address. It was a huge compound, few cars parked in front of it and you noticed a helicopter landing on the top of the building.

With racing heart and an excitement bubbling in your chest, you pushed the doorbell and smiled nervously when the door opened, revealing a very happy Wanda and none other than Steve Rogers peaking from behind her.

That was how you become an Avenger, gaining friends who understood you.

At first you were training with Natasha and Wanda, since Wanda, as well, needed to learn how to fully control her powers. Natasha was a demanding but very patient and supportive trainer, gradually pushing you to try harder and harder until time came for you to start training in pairs with other ‘non-mutant’ recruits.

Wanda was paired up with Steve, you were to practice with Sam Wilson, which made you so nervous you could barely stop yourself from fidgeting.

It wasn’t that you didn’t like Sam. Damn, you adored the guy. He was easy-going, always joking, but serious when you asked for advice or wanted to talk to someone about the problems you had. He never judged, never laughed at whatever silly issues you had and soon, he became one of your closest friends.

However, as the time passed, you discovered that your feelings for him started to change, started to become deeper and once again, you were scared. Wanda was fast to notice your sudden quietness, assuring you that she was there for you. You only asked her to not read your mind, to which she gave you a secretive smile and tossed you a wink. It was obvious that she already knew about your apparently not-so-well-hidden crush. But then again, she was a mind-reader, she usually knew everything before anyone had a chance to open their mouth.

“Morning, ladies!” Sam calls as he walks in the training room, prompting a grin to spread at your face. Natasha greets him with a nod of her head and a smirk.

“Ready, partner?”

“Sure thing, bird-man,” you say teasingly and Sam chuckles airily at the nickname you gave him the first day you’d met him. He won’t ever admit it, but he likes it a lot.

Natasha clear her throat, demanding your attention.

“So, Y/N. I figured we could use Sam’s wings to kinda boost the fire’s range.”

“That’s a great idea, yeah,” you admit and Sam hums with approval from his spot next to you.

“We’re gonna start with those small fire balls to know how far Sam can blow them. Aim at the mannequins, as usual.”

“Yes, ma’am,” Sam says politely, taking a few steps back and spreading the wings in his wake, rising up in no time. You focus your gaze on him for a moment, never getting bored by looking as he flies, spinning around and cheering loudly.

Nat clear her throat again and you blink few times, shifting your eyes at her.

“Whenever you’re ready, Y/N. And don’t worry, I’ll be here if something goes wrong.”

“What if I’ll blow this whole place up?”

“Y/N, I am the one training you, are you doubting me?”

“No, of course not!”

“If it was Stark, you’d probably burn something to the ground sooner or later. I got this. You’re doing great, believe me.”

“Al right,” you mutter, a bit bashful after Nat’s words. But they did what they were supposed to – you’re feeling more sure and so you take a position few feet from the mannequin, waiting for Sam to give you green light.

“C’mon, Y/N, light it up!”

“Here is goes, bird-man!” you outstretch one arm, rubbing your fingers together and when you open your palm fully, a ball of fire presents itself. You focus on maintaining its shape.

“In three, two… one!” throwing your hand up, you let the fire ball stay hanging in the air. In next second you feel a blast of wind and the ball aims directly into mannequin’s head.

“Boom! One down!” Sam cheers, flying just above you to high-five you and you giggle, looking at Nat.

“Lengthen the distance, Y/N,” she says, watching you closely and so you back away further, each time sending a fire ball into the air for Sam to shoot it at the mannequin. Soon, Nat suggests to enhance the balls the further you go and quickly enough you have to use both hands to create fire balls big enough to reach the target.

But the important thing is that you’re successful. You’re cooperating with Sam perfectly, much to Natasha’s satisfaction.

“Okay, guys, you keep that up, I need to see how Rogers is doing. I’ll be right back!” she gives you a thumb up and slides out the door, leaving you and Sam alone.

And that very fact makes you tremble slightly.

“You need a break?” Sam asks, apparently noticing you shaking and you curse yourself for not being able to hide it.

“No, we can keep going.”

“Try to make a flame, I’m gonna blow it at that doll.”

“You sure about that?” you quirk your brow up. “It’s a bit risky.”

“Y/N, ‘risky’ is my second name, trust me, it’s gonna be fine.”

“Well, if you want to get burned…” you muse but a smile curls your lips up and Sam grins from above, positioning himself up and behind you.

“In three, two, one…” you call and start a flame, expecting Sam to either extinguish it with too hard puff or successfully blow it at the target.

But none of that happens. Instead, Sam grunts and lands on the floor with a loud thud, causing your breath to catch in your throat and your heart to skyrocket. You close your palm, putting out the flame and run to him, kneeling by his side.
